Delphi employees volunteer to clean up community waterway during Untied Way's Day of Caring

Several Delphi employees and community volunteers took part in the annual United Way Day of Caring to help cleanup Wildcat Creek in Kokomo, Ind. The volunteers teamed up with the Wildcat Guardians, a group devoted to the protection of the local waterway.

For seven years, Delphi has donated supplies and organized a volunteer crew to clean up one of the targeted sections of the Wildcat Creek.

As the volunteers paddled along in canoes and walked along the creek bank, they worked to spot and collect hundreds of pounds of trash that included such items as footballs, basketballs, bait containers, plastic and styrofoam drink containers, tables, chairs, refrigerators and soccer balls.

In addition, more than 100 tires were collected during the day. The tires had been partially buried along the bank of the creek and crewmembers worked to dig them out. In 2005, the Wildcat Guardians removed more than 3,000 tires from the 1960s era dumpsite and this year's volunteers removed what had been underwater. Retrieved tires are shredded and reused as playground bedding or burned as fuel in industrial boilers.
