Green Light for Racing Safety
Delphi uses its extensive knowledge of the complete vehicle to integrate a broad spectrum of wheel-to-wheel brake and suspension geometries that are ideally suited to vehicle manufacturers' specific program requirements. From a brake corner module to an independent rear driven suspension system, Delphi helps vehicle manufacturers deliver distinctive ride, handling, and braking characteristics, enhancing vehicle performance and customer enthusiasm. Delphi’s engineers analyze design parameters and bring all of the details together to develop total brake and suspension options that are pre-aligned, ready to be bolted onto vehicles, and, if required, delivered in sequence to the vehicle assembly location. To further satisfy our customers, Delphi’s numerous technical centers and manufacturing sites located throughout the world help provide personalized customer service and the timely delivery of these products.
Description
Brake corner, strut, and shock modules are the basic components of Delphi’s module configurations. For example, a strut module can be combined with a brake corner module to create a chassis corner module. Two of these modules are the building blocks to a complete axle module such as the multilink independent rear driven suspension.
This rear suspension, designed by Delphi, is an example of a fully integrated modular assembly. The multilink independent rear driven suspension system provides improved ride and handling characteristics compared to solid axle suspensions. Since the differential does not move up and down with wheel travel in an independent suspension, there is more room to lower the load floor to facilitate additional seating and cargo space. This design enables an excellent linkage ratio for low frame loads by allowing the coil spring to act on a longitudinal arm. In addition, the bushing tuning flexibility provided by the use of multiple links provides a low recessional rate that enhances ride comfort.
Structures Capability
Delphi has the capability to design and manufacture structures for complete subframes and other suspension configurations. Through the use of a new, patented deformation resistance welding technique, Delphi is able to enhance and simplify the overall structure design.
In the illustration above, the concept subframe (far right) is an example of how deformation resistance welding can be applied to a suspension structure such as a subframe. The welding process allows simple, straight tubes to be joined at various nodes, which also serve as attachment points for the module’s suspension components. This subframe then provides a simple, four-point attachment to the vehicle. The result, in many cases, is significant mass and cost savings for the vehicle manufacturer.
