Delphi MAGNASTEER™ Magnetic Assist Steering

Delphi MAGNASTEER™ Magnetic Assist Steering is a variable-effort system that enhances standard power steering systems. It provides a variable torsional rate in the steering gear through the operation of a magnetic machine, which has been incorporated into the steering gear. A coil within the machine regulates the torsional rate of the device.

During parking maneuvers, the steering effort is reduced by subtracting torsional rate from the valve. As vehicle speed increases, the rate increases to provide improved highway feel and stability. MAGNASTEER steering offers a high degree of vehicle tunability, providing a wide range of effort between parking and highway operation.

Benefits

  • Enhances driver feedback
  • Extremely wide range of assist
  • Fully compatible with conventional steering systems and equipment
  • Easy upgrading to incorporate new features and technologies
  • Noncontact mechanization for smooth power steering from one effort level to another
  • Few moving parts minimizes friction and provides exceptional reliability and symmetrical loading
  • Laptop tuning eliminates time-consuming mechanical changes
  • Wide variable-effort and power-assist steering ranges
  • Reduced parasitic losses at idle frees up amperage for other electrical system features

The MAGNASTEER system achieves variable-effort steering by electronically modulating the magnetic torsional rate. Depending on the polarity of the current in the coil, the resulting alignment force is either additive or subtractive to the existing torsion bar rate. The current range capability between additive and subtractive force is –3 amps to +3 amps.
