Diesel Engine Management Systems

Delphi Diesel Catalyzed Particulate Trap (DCPT) Catalytic Converter

The Delphi Diesel Catalyzed Particulate Trap (DCPT) Catalytic Converter is a critical element of the system used to help reduce light duty diesel vehicle exhaust emissions. It captures the particulate matter produced during diesel engine operation and prevents it from being released into the atmosphere.

In addition to trapping soot, the Delphi DCPT Catalytic Converter also catalyzes the reactions that convert soot to compounds common to the air. Soot that is not converted is burned in the filter during regeneration cycles, which are controlled by the engine management system to retain the long-term durability of the filter system. The Delphi DCPT Catalytic Converter can help create the passive/active regeneration operating environment that is critical in helping manufacturers meet engine performance, exhaust emissions and fuel economy objectives.

Benefits

  • Mounting system choices accommodate the use of either silicon carbide (SiC) or cordierite filters
  • Catalyst support and retention eliminates or reduces the risk of ring-off crack failure mechanism
  • Insulation promotes passive regeneration to help increase fuel economy
  • Mechanical stop reduces the risk of filter dislocation due to engine control failure, which could result in unnecessary damage to an expensive and still functioning DCPT component
  • Tailored sizing allows for life-of-the-vehicle operation without cleaning service requirements
  • Variety of shapes enables location forward to reduce system heat losses and promotes passive regeneration, which helps provide fuel economy improvements

Typical Applications

The Delphi Diesel Catalyzed Particulate Trap Catalytic Converter can be designed for any size diesel engine for light duty passenger vehicles with close-coupled or under-floor mounting configurations.

Performance Advantages

The stuffed design of the Delphi Diesel Catalyzed Particulate Trap Catalytic Converter allows a variety of shape options without creating significant misdistribution of mounting forces. Non-round cross-sections allow for mounting closer to manifold/turbo, thus facilitating more passive regeneration and greater fuel economy.

Producing more than 5 million converters per year, Delphi is one of the largest suppliers of catalytic converters in vehicle manufacturers. There are more than 50 million Delphi stuffed converters in the field, subjected to the most extreme operating conditions, in applications from manifold-mount to under-floor. Durability testing shows that stuffed converters outperform other converter designs.

Delphi offers a wide variety of shapes and sizes of DCPT Catalytic Converters. Packaging can be designed to help achieve life-of-the-vehicle ash capacity in smaller converters. At the same time, they help provide optimum engine performance by creating the lowest possible backpressure. Packaging options include packaging diesel oxidation catalyst(s) (DOXC) and DCPT Catalytic Converters separately or integration in combinations that conserve and manage heat energy and optimize the use of space. Delphi offers unique design packaging designs to meet customer space requirements.

The Delphi Advantage

Delphi is a global leader in engine management systems, including exhaust aftertreatment systems. Leveraging this expertise can help customers develop strategies to optimize fuel economy and exhaust emissions from air intake to the tailpipe. Delphi catalytic converters can play a significant role in helping create cost effective, environmentally friendly exhaust systems.

Since 1975, Delphi has produced more than 100 million catalytic converters. Delphi's exhaust emissions control technologies have helped prevent the release of an estimated 50 million tons of hydrocarbons, 245 million tons of carbon monoxide, and 60 million tons of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) into the atmosphere.
