The Delphi EPIC Diesel Fuel Injection System is a full authority fuel injection system for direct injection and indirect injection engines and is designed to help vehicle manufacturers meet Euro-3 emission regulations.  The EPIC System features a proven Delphi fuel injection pump and is operated by an electronic control unit (ECU).  In addition to helping reduce engine emissions, it helps provide improved engine idle and better driving performance.  Other major features of the Delphi EPIC System include:

• Internal cam pumping
• Closed-loop control of fuel metering and timing
• Dashboard interface

• Enables accurate timing of fuel delivery and control of exhaust gas recirculation to help create a substantial reduction of engine emissions
• By using transient response characteristics of the pump and a sophisticated ECU, the system minimizes engine speed oscillations during acceleration to provide improved drivability
• Modulates shot-to-shot fuel delivery to tightly control engine idle speed, thus helping to reduce noise and vibration and deliver smoother idling
• Can be integrated with other vehicle systems including traction control, anti-lock braking systems (ABS), automatic transmission, and other systems
• Can be linked to a variety of other vehicle features via the ECU such as cruise control, anti-theft systems, and air conditioning
• Carries out an extensive range of self-diagnostics and performance checks and provides alerts to the driver via dashboard warning light

Typical Applications

The Delphi EPIC Diesel Fuel Injection System is available for use with the following:

• Indirect injection (IDI) engines with injection pressures up to 350 bar
• Direct injection (DI) engines with injection pressures up to 950 bar  

Performance Advantages

The principal component of the Delphi EPIC Diesel Fuel Injection System is its fuel injection pump which includes Delphi's proven cam pumping mechanism.  Fuel enters the pumping chamber via a transfer pump.  The ECU, which receives input from sensors positioned at various points in the vehicle, the engine, and the pump, sends the appropriate signals to the pump's drain and feeds pump actuators to operate at chosen timing and fuel delivery and enables accurate control of the fuel injection.

The Delphi EPIC System is fully flexible and can adjust fueling and timing to meet different engine and starting requirements.
